What a Discover export looks like

Because the sources conflict on signs, "Flip signs" is left off by default here. The sample uses made-up rows with purchases shown as positive, which is the case where you would tick it. Not affiliated with Discover.

How it maps to YNAB

Dates in the converted file: MM/DD/YYYY. YNAB's help page does not state a required date format, and its import screen lets you check how the date was read.

Import into YNAB

  1. Open the budget on a computer and drag the converted file onto YNAB, anywhere in the app.
  2. In the Import Transactions window, check that YNAB matched Date, Payee, Memo, Outflow and Inflow to the right columns. Use the dropdowns if not.
  3. If inflows and outflows are reversed, use "Swap Inflow and Outflow".
  4. Review the preview, then import.

Sources: YNAB help: File-Based Import. YNAB says CSV is its recommended file format, that you can use either separate Outflow and Inflow columns or one Amount column, and that it does not recommend importing transactions more than a year old. Not affiliated with YNAB.

Questions about Discover and YNAB

Do I need to rename columns for YNAB? No. The converted file already uses Date, Payee, Memo, Outflow and Inflow, and YNAB shows a mapping step in case you want to adjust it.

Is my file sent anywhere by StatementSnap? No, conversion happens in your browser. YNAB itself sends the file you import to YNAB over an encrypted connection, as its help page describes.

FAQ

Is my bank data uploaded?

No. The converter is JavaScript running in your browser tab. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

Which banks work?

Any bank that exports CSV. Dates, delimiters (comma, semicolon, tab), European number formats, separate debit/credit columns, headerless files and extra summary rows are handled, and you can override the column mapping.

What about ambiguous dates like 03/04/2024?

If every date could be day-first or month-first, the tool warns you and lets you pick the order before downloading.

Is this affiliated with any bank, Intuit, Xero or YNAB?

No. Names are used only to describe which file layout or import format is meant.
